The Seletar Aerospace Park in Singapore is an industrial zone for the aerospace industry. This sixty million Singapore dollar development plan covers the 140 hectare site by Seletar Airport and will enhance and strengthen Singapore as an aviation industry hub. The development will provide extra space to allow the aerospace industry to expand and grow further in Singapore and to complement the existing aerospace industry activities located at Loyang and Changi North.
Historical Background of Seletar Aerospace
The Singapore Government, the Economic Development Board and JTC Corporation in a joint venture announced the aerospace park plan in May 2006. A strong demand for services related to the aviation industries and soaring growth potential formed the background for the decision to build the aerospace park, and accordingly JTC Corporation in consultation with government agencies executed the planning and infrastructure improvements for the park. This development of the aerospace hub should satisfy the industry’s needs for land for at least a decade.
Seletar Aerospace Park will cluster aerospace activities, for example aerospace maintenance, repair, servicing, design, systems and components manufacture, business and other aviation activities as well as a training campus for pilots, aviation Lorong 1 Toa Payoh Condo professionals and technical staff, together on one dedicated site.
The Blueprint for Aerospace Hub
New roads, infrastructure and most importantly a great deal of space will be made available to aircraft component design and manufacturing companies, small aircraft manufacturers and training schools.
JTC Corporation announce the blueprint for the Seletar Aerospace Park on June 26 2007. The Seletar Airport will be redeveloped to support the park, included among the improvements will be lengthening the runway to 1, 800 metres and the improvement of aero systems to allow larger aircraft to use the runway.
The Park’s Tenants
The first park tenants were expected to move into their new premises in late 2010. These first tenants included Singapore Technologies Aerospace, Jet Aviation Eurocopter (South East Asia) and EADS Innovation Works all of whom planned to expand their existing Seletar facilities.
In late November 2007, Rolls Royce PLC announced that it would build an aero engine factory in the Seletar Aerospace Park with an expected completion date at the end of 2009. Rolls Royce’s first Asian aero engine factory will complement the work at Roll’s Derby (UK) facilities. This facility was expected to provide around 330 jobs.
